Der Staat Belize liegt in Zentralamerika und befindet sich im Südosten der Halbinsel Yucatán. Belize grenzt im Norden an Mexiko und im Süden und Westen an Guatemala. Zwischen 250 v. Chr. und 900 v. Chr. siedelten sich in diesem Gebiet und in Teilen von Honduras und El Salvador die Maya an und kultivierten Kakao.
Auch heute leben noch Nachfahren der Urväter der Kakaokultur in Belize und pflegen das über Jahrhunderte überlieferte Wissen über Kakao. Der Bio-Kakao aus Belize ist einer der sehr wenigen und seltenen Heirloom-Kakaosorten. Ein wahres Erbstück des vor Jahrhunderten in Belize angebauten Kakaos.
